Rose H. Volberding

January 6, 1922 — August 28, 2017

Rose Helen Volberding 95, long-time Livingston resident, passed away peacefully at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown on August 28, 2017.  Rose was born in Hazelton, ND on January 6, 1922 to Peter and Adelaide (Fisher) Mastel.  She attended Hazelton high school, and upon graduation entered the Presentation School of Nursing in Miles City, MT.  Following graduation, Rose entered the US Army Nurse Corps in 1945 and served at Schick General Hospital in Clinton, IA, and Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, UT.  She was honorably discharged in 1946 whereupon she became an air stewardess with TWA airlines and later with Northwest Orient Airlines.  Once her interest in flying was fulfilled, Rose reentered the nursing profession at Park Hospital in Livingston, MT which included duty at Mammoth Hospital in Yellowstone National Park.  It was in Yellowstone that she met Alfred Clark Volberding, known to his friends as "Cookie" or just "Cook."  They fell in love and were married on March 31, 1951, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Hazelton, ND.  Rose and Cook then set upon raising a family, though she occasionally returned to nursing duties at the Livingston Memorial Hospital.

Rose was a very devout Catholic and was active in the local parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church.  She had a splendid singing voice, and was

often requested to sing at weddings in addition to participating in the Church's choir.  Rose loved classical music, watching birds and other

wildlife, and gazing at the stars.

She is survived by her sons Thomas (Donna) Martin of Georgetown Lake, MT, James Edward of Lewistown, MT; one sister Helen M. Andrus of

Dickenson, ND; two grandchildren Jennifer Lynn of Tulsa, OK and Ian Thomas of Bozeman, MT; numerous nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her dear husband Cook, her daughter Alice, her son Daniel Peter, her parents, and fourteen of her fifteen brothers

  and sisters.

Graveside services for Rose H. Volberding will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 31st at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Livingston, MT.  The Cloyd Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, Rose would wish that a donation be made to a charity of one's choice.  Condolences for the family may be posted online at www.cloydfuneralhome.com.
