Norman W. Coleman

August 26, 1927 — February 8, 2020

Norman W. Coleman, 92, of Lewistown, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, passed away the evening of February 8, 2020 in Valle Vista Manor after a short battle with lung cancer.

He was born August 26, 1927 in Lewistown, the son of Floyd and Lillian (Miller) Coleman. He received his schooling in Lewistown.

In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S, NAVY. He served in the South Pacific area and in the occupation of Japan. After WWII he was employed as Foreman of the Fergus County Creamery until the start of the Korean War when he re-enlisted for four more years.

On May 31, 1947 he was united in marriage to Vivian Hitchcock in Billings. She died of cancer in November 1997.

In 1957 he started working for Sears Roebuck & Co. in Lewistown until the store was closed in 1975 when he and Vivian acquired the Catalog Franchise. They continued with Sears until 1990. After a brief retirement they worked at the 4 Aces Casino from 1990 to 1995 when they both retired permanently.

Norm was an avid pilot and received his private pilot's license in 1947. During his lifetime he owned two airplanes and most of his fondest memories centered around his flying days. He served as President of Central Montana Hanger of the Montana Pilots Association for two terms and as Chairman of the Aviation Committee for the Lewistown Area Chamber of Commerce, also for two terms.

Norm enjoyed woodworking and became quite an authority on the wood-lathe. He and Vivian loved traveling to see their family whenever they could. He and Vivian both loved to gamble and spent many summers going to Jackpot.

Norm is survived by two daughters, Carol (Lee) Signalness of Sun River, MT and Nancy (John) Wagner of Hayden, ID/Goodyear, AZ; six grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) LaTray of Aloha, OR, Dee (Quentin) Kujala of Helena, MT, Jason Wagner of Spokane, WA, Amanda (Wade) Foster of Goodyear, AZ, Melissa (Brett) Kinzer of Lewiston, ID and Bryan (JoElla) Signalness of Vaughn, MT; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren (number 4 on its way); sisters-in-law, Ella Rindal of Roy and Barbara Martinson of Lewistown; brother-in-law, Harold Levens of Bozeman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; his parents; three brothers, Yale, Richard and Ronald; twin sisters, Nada Hassler and Nita Stamm; and one granddaughter, Billie Jo Maphies.

Funeral Services for Norman W. Coleman will be Saturday, February 15th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with committal on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lewistown City Cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is assisting the family.
