Joseph R Stahl

February 25, 1946 — June 22, 2020

It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph R Stahl announce his unexpected passing on June 22, 2020.  Joe was born in Sterling, Alberta, Canada on February 25, 1946; the third child to John and Rebecca (Hofer) Stahl. This family later moved to central Montana and were essential in the growth of the Deerfield Hutterite Colony, where he resided for the rest of his life.

Joe was united in marriage to Maria Walter (Mary) on November 30, 1974. To this Holy union, they welcomed 4 children: Jerry, Mark, Clara, and Diana.

Joe was a big man which matched nicely with his giant sense of humor and quick wit. He spent most of his younger days chumming with his brother, where one went, the other was sure to be close by. Joe enjoyed working at the colony. You could say that he knew something about everything and was a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades! He was the manager of the Hog Operation for many years and enjoyed helping his brother John with the carpentry. Joe was also responsible for raising the chickens on the Colony for many years. Joe was an incredibly hard worker, who just retired 2 years ago; for as long as his health allowed, he would drive his red and white single axel truck at harvest time and haying season. Joe took tremendous pride in all that he did and was never known to do anything halfway.

Dad enjoyed taking Sunday evening drives, checking the crops, taking in the scenery, and observing the livestock. The family fondly recalls fishing trips, blowing on the dice to win the pennies while playing 6-5-4, playing checkers, and enjoying each other's company. Dad had a sweet tooth and you could always enjoy a treat with him.

Mary was the love of his life. He would take a few moments every day to make sure she knew that, in the loving, teasing way that only he could. He escorted and accompanied her to prayer meeting every evening. Ever the tease, a nickname was given for all the special people in his life. Always the family man, our Dad took great honor in his ability to offer care for his Mom when she was elderly; doing the lunch dishes with "a lot of foam", offering support and comfort and a listening ear. "Pop Joe" was a proud family man and was always happy to share a story with you about his kids or grandchildren. With reference to his grandchildren, often he would say "He's a go-getter" or "That won't slow her down". Grandpa Joe looked forward to his talks and visits with the little ones, they lit up his life and added a spark (or several!). He was a great mentor, motivator, and encourager.

He could talk to anybody about anything and would say "Sit down and have a ‘wisit'".

Joe was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, infant sister Rebecca, brother John. He leaves to carry on legacy - his loving wife, Mary; son Jerry (Maggie) of Fairbanks, AK children Seth and Tyler, Mark (Delayne) of Billings and children Emerysn and Haidyn, Clara of Deerfield; Diana (David) of Smoky Lake Colony and children Cameron, Jenessa, Weston and Analynn.

He will be fondly remembered by many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and the numerous lives he has touched. He was truly a favorite Husband, Dad, Uncle, Brother, and Friend. "We will miss you always"
