Gustave E. Swanson

January 22, 1924 — January 9, 2018

Gustave E. (Gus) Swanson 93 of Lewistown died Tuesday evening, January 9th, 2018 in the Villa of natural causes.  He was born January 22, 1924 on the family homestead near Cheadle, MT the son of William and Katie (Abbott) Swanson.  He received his education in Lewistown and graduated from Fergus High School in 1941.  He worked in the family coal mine until entering the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1946 returning to Lewistown after his discharge in 1947.  Gus was considered part of the occupying forces of World War II, though the majority of hostilities had ceased.  He worked on farms and in the coal mine in Central Montana.  On December 12, 1953 he was united in marriage to Marie F. Darrah in Lewistown.  He then worked for George Fries at his service station and then Rindal Oil delivering fuel.  He worked several years as a rural mail carrier, returning to Rindal Oil until his retirement in the mid 1990's. 

Gus enjoyed time with family and friends, cutting wood, gardening and was an avid reader.  He was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Lewistown.

He is survived by his wife Marie of Lewistown; sons Gary (Kate) of Helena, Greg (Terri) of Woodinville, WA and Rod (Wendy) of Missoula, MT; daughter Pam (Jerry) Kaiser of Shepherd, MT; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Memorial Services for Gus Swanson will be Saturday, January 27th, 2017 @ 1:00 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with committal to be at a later date.  The Cloyd Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Friends are asked to make memorials to the charity of their choice and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
