Gertrude M. Hamilton

May 11, 1920 — November 4, 2016

Gertrude (Shubert) Hamilton 94 of Winifred died Friday afternoon, November 4th, 2016 in Valle Vista Manor of natural causes. Born on May 11, 1920 at Salt Creek to Emil and Laura (Faush) Schubert, she was the oldest of five children. She attended grade school at the Balky Horse School and graduated from Fergus High School in Lewistown.

Gertrude married James (Jim) Hamilton on October 7, 1938 in Lewistown. Their first home was in Lewistown, where they ran a dairy with Jim’s brother, George, for several years. Gertrude and Jim subsequently returned to Salt Creek, where they farmed and ranched until Jim’s death in 1982. Gertrude later moved to Winifred, where she remained until her death.

She loved gardening, collecting history about the town of Winifred, and taking an annual combine ride during harvest. She lovingly organized photo albums for several family members, baked homemade cookies and bread, and was very often heard making sassy comments. Gertrude was fondly known for her selfless devotion to her children and grandchildren, generosity, independence and stubbornness.

Gertrude is survived by her son Nobel (Kathy Hamilton of Nampa, ID, daughter Betty (Bob) Taylor of Denton, son Donald (Carla) Hamilton of Kent, WA; sister Irene Gonzales of Seattle, WA and brother Dick (Barb) Schubert of Missoula, MT; seven grandchildren Dennis Hamilton, Dan Hamilton, Kevin (Jennifer) Taylor, Karla (Jim) Taylor, Lynette Hamilton, Sheila (Matt) Newberry and Justin Hamilton; seven great grandchildren Jenna, Josh, Kari (Zack) Kendal, Aubrey, Emmitt and Walker; several nieces and nephews, along with five special people, Janet Poertner, Judy Brooks, Cherry Arthur, Shirley Benes and Betty Shubert.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and they all brought her great joy in her later years.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Doris Heggem Poe and Thelma Dreyer, grandchildren Jerry Hamilton and Dawn Hamilton and great granddaughter Riley Schuetzle.
