Gary Smith

October 5, 1946 — November 29, 2023

If you know, you know. If you ever called G.S. Oil, and you were greeted by the phrase, "This is the A**hole" then you know Gary. He is forever the prankster and is known as a man you can never take too seriously. If he wasn't teasing or being ridiculous, you knew he wasn't feeling well. Gary was born October 5, 1946, to his parents Pearl & Clay in Lewistown, Mt. He spent his childhood running amuck and charming the community at the Smith's Store, run by his mother in Roy Mt. He was a feisty child, keeping the town on its toes as he pranked his way through school. Gary graduated from Roy High School in 1964, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years. He served during the Vietnam and Six Day Wars.

Gary was married to Lucille Gar from 1968-1976, with whom he had three children, Gary Robert, Earl, and Carrie. Gary joined families with Jolene Hirter Slaby in 1978. He stepped in as a father figure to her son, Tony, and raised him as his own. Gary and Jolene married in December of 1980, and Gary eventually legally adopted Tony as his son.

Gary has always been a hard worker. There hasn't been a time in his life when he wasn't working to serve his community-his family. He had various service jobs as a Gandy Dancer and Farm Laborer before starting Gary's Service Station in Billings, Mt. In 1972 Gary, with the support of his parents, started G.S. Oil in Roy. This is where he continued to work 72-hour weeks serving his community until three weeks before his death on November 29, 2023. Over the years, G.S. Oil operated multiple businesses in the area, including Little Montana Truckstop, Winnett Tire, and Union 76 Bult Plant.

Not only did Gary serve his community through his businesses, but he was also a 54-year veteran of the American Legion Post 96 in Roy, a member of the Roy Volunteer Fire Department, Roy Volunteer Ambulance, and the Roy Rodeo Club.

Gary is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jolene, his sons, Gary Robert (Jordan) of Laurel, Earl Ray (Shonna) of Malta, Tony (Janice) of Redlands, CA, and daughter, Carrie (Troy) of Malta, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.
