With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ethel Marie Phillips, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Marie passed away on May 12, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and unwavering kindness.
Born on April 7, 1958, in Malta, Montana, to Cleo and Jake Phillips, Marie’s life journey began in the small-town charm of Malta and later took her to Washington, Nevada, Oklahoma, Chinook, MT, and eventually back to Malta. No matter where she lived, Marie’s compassionate heart and magnetic personality made a lasting impression on those around her.
Early in life, Marie embraced love and married soon after finding it. From that union came her greatest joy—her daughter, Heather. Devoted to her role as a mother, Marie made the decision to return to Montana from her home in Oklahoma to be closer to family and raise Heather surrounded by love and support.
Marie had an incredible gift for connecting with others. She worked for many years as a waitress and bartender, where her vibrant personality and genuine kindness lit up every room. Her friendly spirit and infectious laughter created bonds that often blossomed into lifelong friendships.
Marie found so much happiness in being a granny. She had an incredible talent for whipping up whatever dinner or dessert her grandkids requested, including their favorite, her legendary cinnamon rolls. She delighted in spoiling her grandkids, showering them with love, treats, and special moments that will be cherished forever.
Above all, Marie's heart belonged to her family. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Heather (Micky) Haney, and her adored grandchildren: Alexis, Aliza, and Grady. Her memory will also be cherished by her sister, June; her nieces, Misty (Will), Jaylene, and Jori; her nephews, Jake (Gal) and Brock; her great-nieces, Samantha (Logan), Kaiya, Kinzleigh, Nevaeh, De'Shana, Adalee, Olivia, Kadence, Aubrey, and Madysen; her great-nephews, Lucas, Tobias, Ryder, Cameron, Jackson, Bentley, Ryker, Cache, and Cannon; and her great-great-nephew, Greyson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Cleo Phillips; her siblings, William Phillips and Patricia Schefflemaer; and her great-nephew, Noah Diaz.
Marie will be remembered not only for the love she gave but also for the joy she spread so effortlessly. Her warm hugs, kind words, and bright smile touched countless lives. Though she has left this world, the memories she created and the love she shared will live on in all who were lucky enough to know her.
A small service to celebrate Marie’s life is being planned for mid-June. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cloyd Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be posted online at www.cloydfuneralhome.com
